Munich’s Famed Hofbrauhaus

Hofbrauhaus is known far & wide as Munich’s signature beer hall, so we had to check it out. I have to say, the food, the atmosphere, and the beer lived up to the hype! One of my favorite meals in Munich.

Englischer Garden Park & Eisbach Surfing Wave

Munich’s most famous park gets its glory for good reason. Sprawling fields, a babbling creek, wildflowers & a giant Chinese Pagoda/Biergarten–what’s not to love? The locals certainly do as it was packed on a Thursday. Who doesn’t love a beer in the sun?
And you can’t not stop by to admire the athletic talents of the surfers at the Eisbach. Yes, surfers in the middle of a park, in the middle of a city, in the middle of a landlocked country in Europe. The Eisbach is a man-made surfing wave from a fast flowing river. The wave is narrow so the surfers must be talented, and not to mention, they have quite an audience watching them there every day so only the most confident try it out.

Dallmayr: Munich’s Luxury Food Hall

A family owned business with some of the most famous coffee in all of Europe, Dallmayr has every delicious specialty food you could want–from fresh produce, fish, meats, homemade breads and the sweets—oh the sweets! I took home a box of their sugary fruit gelees as well as their local honeys. But trust me, I could eat all my meals at Dallmary everyday. This is how food markets should be.

Munich’s Best Beergarden

In my opinion, Munich’s Best Beer Garden is the Wirsthaus at BavariaPark, and believe me, that is high praise. Munich is home to some of the best beer gardens, large & small, indoors & out. This one really struck me because of it’s laid back “locals-only” atmosphere, naturally beautiful landscape, very good food and of course, Munich’s favorite Augustiner beer on tap. It’s also just steps away from the Oktoberfest fairgrounds.

They also have the upscale Kongresshalle bar next door, perfect for the transition from a few steins and food by day, to a classy cocktail & dancing by night. Put this on your itinerary for Munich and plan to stay a while. 🙂

TBEX 2012: Kelley’s 5 Takeaways from the 2012 Travel Blog Exchange in Keystone

“Rocky Mountain High…” was running through our mind’s as we breathed in the crisp, green air of Keystone, Colorado. The scenery of Keystone was pretty hard to beat–gorgeous peaks, bright blue skies, an overdose of greenery at every turn. Many travel industry veterans and newcomers came out to the 4th Annual Travel Blog Exchange Conference and with the recent BlogWorld acquisition, the pressure was on.
In short, they succeeded.

The conference was run smoothly and had useful enhancements like a pre-conference networking & an appointment interface that allowed attendees to arrange quick “speed-date” style meetings during Sunday’s free time.

Keystone Mountain & Vail Resorts went above and beyond, literally, to make sure that we were fed and well taken care of. From the opening celebrations at 11,000 feet on Keystone’s summit, to the shuttle vans that always seemed to be ready to take you door to door, it felt like the whole town of Keystone was trying to make sure all TBEX-ers were happy.

A standout panel was hosted by Expedia and they discussed their success at working with bloggers & vloggers (several which are Tripfilms’ own all stars). It was refreshing to see big brands see the value in blogging and vlogging, and accepting that these voices are some of the most influential in travel right now.

I was very excited to have almost everyone at the conference know about Tripfilms and to have so many people come up to me to ask about how they can start making videos or include videos on their sites, or how they can make their current videos better. The time of video is upon us and we are excited to be at the helm!

The best moments of TBEX though are never planned–the casual conversation in the hallway between sessions, the jokes shared in line for lunch or the introduction to a new future partner over hors d’oeuvres–just being there opens you up to your own community and together we can only bring each other up! A great man once told me, “rising Waters lifts all boats.” And that’s what I feel TBEX was for me this year.

My Five Biggest Takeaways From TBEX 2012

1. Meeting many NEW people in travel and building upon past relationships

2. A better handle on the state of travel industry today and the trends to jump on for the future (ahem video…)

3. An introduction to new concept and ideas that inspires yourself to start thinking in new ways

4. To be able to learn techniques from leaders in the field and how to improve your own brand/company

5. A unification and strengthening of the travel community as a whole

*I was going to add lots of free delicious foods (chocolate towers?!) and free drinks (margaritas on the ranch) but figured that just contributes to the success of the 5 takeaways!

Swiss Miss for a Week: What to do in Zurich

I had no idea what to expect when the train rolled into Zurich. I knew it was the capital, one of Switzerland’s biggest cities, and from I had heard, very pretty. But I wasn’t expecting what I found.

I only had about 24 hours, but from the amazing macarons at Sprungli, to the hot bars out in Zurich West, to the culinary playhouse that is MarktHalle, I had a blast. And it didn’t hurt that my hotel, the Hotel Widder, was not only modern and stylish, but it was the PLACE TO BE in the evening at the Widder Bar. The food at this jazz bar was superb but the main draw was the “library of spirits” and the expert bartenders that made swanky, sexy named drinks.

I spent a lovely evening with Corina Sohner from the hotel, and she and I had fun tasting Markus Blattner’s concoctions. And Alexsander Kroll’s dinner was a dining experience that I’ll never forget. Dish upon dish was served and each were as beautiful as they were tasty. I insisted on going behind the scenes into the kitchen to see where the magic happened. The kitchen was just as pristine as the dining room and it’s no wonder that every dish is a marvel considering the time that is spent perfecting each detail.

I was sad to fly out from Zurich and wanted more time to explore the winding streets of the Alstadt–which looked like a page out of medival fairytales. However, I know my week as a Swiss Miss only confirmed that I’ll be returning and spending much more than a week in this vibrant, innovative and just plain breath-taking country. At least for now, I’ll have my videos so I can relive all those moments (and delicious meals!).
